This truly is an incredible bit of footage.
Mount up the the shuttle's solid-fuel booster rockets, go full screen, crank the volume, and just enjoy the ride up...an almost mesmerising tumble through near space at almost 3000mph...and then the rough ride back down. All in just 440 seconds.
George Lucas' Skywalker Sound helped bring out the sound from the on-camera microphones.
Keep an eye out for some of that dreaded ice falling down and just missing the wings just after takeoff, the weirdness of breaking the sound barrier at 70 seconds, and watch the speed plummet the moment the booster hits the atmosphere coming back.
And they're putting together a whole Blu-Ray disc of this sort of stuff??
